WHAT IS

SCLEROTHERAPY?

Sclerotherapy is a highly effective and minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat spider veins and varicose veins. During the procedure, a special solution, known as a sclerosant, is injected directly into the affected veins. This solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and eventually fade away over time.

SCLEROTHERAPY

ORLANDO

Sclerotherapy: the undercover superhero of vein treatments! It's the stealthy solution for those pesky spider veins and varicose veins. Picture this: a specialized solution, armed and injected into the targeted veins, causing them to surrender and fade away over time.

Sclerotherapy is particularly effective for treating small to medium-sized spider veins and varicose veins that are close to the surface of the skin. The procedure is quick, usually taking only about 15 to 30 minutes per session, and requires no downtime, allowing patients to resume their normal activities immediately afterward.

Over the following weeks and months, the treated veins gradually fade from view, leaving behind smoother, clearer skin. Multiple sessions may be needed to achieve optimal results, depending on the extent of the vein problem and the individual's response to treatment.

Overall, sclerotherapy offers a safe, reliable, and proven solution for addressing unsightly spider veins and varicose veins, helping patients regain confidence in their appearance and enjoy healthier, more beautiful legs.

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

SCLEROTHERAPY &

LASER VEIN TREATMENT?

Sclerotherapy: Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the affected veins. This solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and eventually fade from view. Over time, the treated vein is absorbed by the body and disappears. Sclerotherapy is typically used for larger spider veins or varicose veins and is often preferred for veins that are too small or too tortuous for laser treatment.

Laser Vein Therapy: Laser treatment, also known as laser therapy or laser vein removal, uses focused laser energy to heat and destroy the targeted spider veins. The heat generated by the laser causes the vein to collapse and seal shut, eventually leading to its disappearance. Laser treatment is often favored for smaller spider veins and those close to the surface of the skin. It is also a popular choice for veins on the face or other sensitive areas.

FAQ'S

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat spider veins and varicose veins by injecting a specialized solution directly into the affected veins.

How does sclerotherapy work?

The injected solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and eventually fade away, leading to smoother and clearer skin over time.

Is sclerotherapy painful?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure, often described as a mild burning or tingling sensation at the injection site.

How long does a sclerotherapy session take?

Sclerotherapy sessions typically last about 30 minutes, depending on the number and size of veins being treated.

Are there any side effects or risks associated with sclerotherapy?

While sclerotherapy is generally safe, some patients may experience temporary side effects such as bruising, swelling, or skin discoloration. Serious complications are rare but may include allergic reactions or blood clots.

How many sclerotherapy sessions are needed to see results?

The number of sessions required varies depending on the severity of the vein condition and individual response to treatment. Most patients require multiple sessions (3-5) spaced 6-8 weeks apart to achieve optimal results.

Is there any downtime after sclerotherapy?

There is minimal to no downtime after sclerotherapy, and patients can usually resume normal activities immediately following the procedure. However, strenuous exercise and prolonged standing should be avoided for a short period. (see after care)

How long do the results of sclerotherapy last?

Sclerotherapy can provide long-lasting results, but new veins may develop over time due to factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, or lifestyle habits. Periodic maintenance treatments may be recommended to maintain optimal results.

Who is a good candidate for sclerotherapy?

Ideal candidates for sclerotherapy are individuals with spider veins or small to medium-sized varicose veins who are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the treatment.

Where can I find a reputable provider for sclerotherapy?

To ensure safe and effective treatment, it's essential to choose a qualified and experienced medical professional or vein specialist who specializes in sclerotherapy. Researching online reviews and consulting with the provider beforehand can help you make an informed decision.

PRE & POST CARE

As you are required to wear support hose and there is bruising and swelling associated with the treatment, it is advisable to schedule treatments several weeks prior to or after special occasions, events, or vacations that might be impacted by these factors. You must also avoid vigorous physical activity for two weeks. Walking and normal daily activities can be resumed immediately. Your legs will look worse before they start looking better. Many patients need a number of weeks for the bruising and discoloration to fade.

PRE:

  • 14 DAYS BEFORE: Limit sun exposure two weeks before treatment.
  • Bring compression socks or hose to wear when you leave the office. You must wear these for one week after treatment. We recommend thigh-high or pantyhose style with 20 to 30 Hg compression (you can purchase off amazon).
  • 7 DAYS BEFORE: DO NOT use blood thinning substances such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and/or Vitamin E  at least one week before treatment to decrease bruising or bleeding. AVOID blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, and Aleve. Also avoid herbal supplements, such as Garlic, Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, St. John’s Wort, and Omega-3 capsules. Please note: If you have a cardiovascular history, please check with your doctor prior to stopping use of Aspirin.  Start taking Arnika and/or Bromelain supplements to help reduce the risk of bruising. These are available in office to purchase.
  • 5 DAYS BEFORE: DO NOT use bronzers or tanning lotions on your legs.

DAY OF TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Eat a light meal one hour prior to your appointment.
  • Bring loose-fitting shorts or dress to wear during the procedure.
  • Bring your medical-grade, pantyhose-style support hose with you to your appointment. Consider them an important part of your treatment. Gentle compression of the legs will accelerate healing, reduce swelling and bruising, and lessen discomfort.
  • If you do not have a medical grade compression stocking at the time of your appointment you can not be treated and subject to rescheduling fee of $50.
  • The support stockings may be removed in the evening but should be worn as much as possible while awake and on your feet.

POST-CARE

  • It is not unusual to have tenderness and bruising at the injection sites in the first 2 to 3 days following treatment. These symptoms can usually be relieved by elevation of the leg(s). Use of a heating pad may help.
  • If necessary, you may take Advil or Tylenol (preferred over aspirin – which may cause increased bruising).
  • You may resume normal activities. Avoid strenuous physical activity such as aerobics, jogging, and heavy  lifting for the first 2 to 3 days after procedure.
  • Avoid prolonged standing in one position. If you must stand in one place, move your feet or toes frequently or support one foot on a small stool or box.
  • Wear your medical-grade, pantyhose-style support hose during the day for 7 to 14 days after treatment. If you develop swelling in your ankle or foot or have unexpected pain, be sure the compression bandage or support stockings are not too tight or improperly fitted. If you find you must restrict your activities or your return to work, please call our office.
  • Limit sun exposure for 4 to 6 weeks after treatment.
  • DO NOT apply creams or lotions to your legs for 24 hours after treatment.
  • If swelling occurs over an injection site, elevate and apply ice to the affected leg.
  • Small dark clots may develop in the treated veins. Contact your provider if one of the clotted areas becomes very red, tender, and/or inflamed.
  • A small, superficial ulceration of the skin may occur over an injected vein. This usually does not leave a scar but needs to be examined immediately by your provider.
  • Irritation of the injected vein rarely occurs. This can be treated with compression stockings and anti-inflammatory medications such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Continue taking Arnika and/or Bromelain supplements to help reduce the risk of bruisingfor 5-7 days after. These are available in office to purchase.
